(U.S.) Understanding Your Benefits: Supplemental Benefits

Michelle MachenOur Stories

Choosing the right workplace benefits can help you address your health care expenses. At Mauser, we want to help you understand your options, so that you are well-planned and well protected. The “Understanding Your Benefits” series provides general information to help you make more informed decisions regarding your benefit elections during Open Enrollment.
*The following information applies to U.S employees eligible for Mauser Packaging Solutions benefits. Disregard this communication if you are an employee located outside of the United States or otherwise ineligible for these benefits.
Mauser provides Supplemental Health Benefits through MetLife to complement your medical coverage. These voluntary plans – Accident Insurance, Critical Illness Insurance, and Hospital Indemnity Insurance – offer financial protection by helping you pay for certain expenses through a cash payment made directly to you. For example, you can use your payment on transportation to doctors’ appointments, additional childcare, and so much more. You have total flexibility to spend the money on anything you need.

Enrolling in one or more of the Supplemental Health Benefits, along with your medical plan, might provide you with an additional level of coverage you require. For example, if you enroll in the Mauser HSP/HSA plan, Supplemental Health Benefits can help “bridge the gap” towards meeting your deductible. Likewise, the PPO plan may be enough for you on its own, without one of these Supplemental Health Benefits. The variable you need to consider when determining the right plan care combination is your overall healthcare needs; specifically, what are your anticipated medical needs in the next year (surgery, pregnancy, etc.)?

For more information on Supplemental Health Benefits or help thinking through your needs, you are encouraged to call Mauser’s Benefits Service Center and speak with an experienced Benefits Counselor at 1-833-793-0802 (Monday – Friday 9:00am to 6:00pm CT).

If you enroll in more than one kind of supplemental insurance, a single event could be covered by more than one plan.

Did you know?

All three plans – Accident Insurance, Critical Illness Insurance, and Hospital Indemnity Insurance – come with an annual $75 Health Screening Benefit. The Health Screening Benefit provides an annual $75 per covered person (for covered employee and spouse only with Critical Illness Insurance) for completing one of over 40 eligible health screenings such as blood tests, colonoscopy, mammogram, and more. These plans can pay for themselves by utilizing this benefit!

Accident Insurance

Accident Insurance provides a cash payment if you have a covered accident outside of work that requires medical care such as a dislocation, fracture, or an ER or urgent care visit. The benefit pays a lump sum benefit to you if you incur an injury because of an accident for over 150 covered events and services such as fractures, dislocations, burns, and medical treatments or tests resulting from an accident.

Meet Shelia

A broken leg meant Sheila had to stay off her feet for a while with several weeks of physical therapy. Sheila is in great health and is enrolled in the Mauser HSP/HSA plan. While she was recovering from this unexpected break, Sheila's Accident Insurance helped her cover the costs. Sheila used part of her Accident Insurance benefit toward her physical therapy expenses. She used the rest toward after-school care for her children while she was at physical therapy appointments.

Critical Illness Insurance

Critical Illness Insurance provides a cash payment if you are diagnosed with a covered condition such as cancer, heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. If a serious illness occurs, this coverage provides you with a lump sum payment upon diagnosis of $10,000, $20,000, $30,000, or $40,000 dollars for you, your spouse, and/or children.

Meet Alex

A heart attack forced Alex to take an extended leave. While he is enrolled in the Mauser HSP/HSA plan, Alex was still responsible for paying out-of-pocket costs that he didn't anticipate. With his Critical Illness Insurance, Alex was able to afford the treatment he needed without dipping into his savings. Alex used part of his Critical Illness benefit toward the unexpected out-of-pocket costs associated with the surgery and hospital stay and ongoing costs for outpatient cardiac rehabilitation and prescription medications.

Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Hospital Indemnity Insurance provides a cash payment if you have a planned or unplanned hospital stay (due to childbirth, illness, injury, etc.) or receive other hospital services. Since hospital visits can be costly, this benefit provides coverage for those extra out-of-pocket expenses beyond what your medical plan may cover.

Meet Patricia

With a normal delivery for her new baby boy, Patricia’s Hospital Indemnity Insurance helped her, and her husband pay for her time in the hospital. While she is enrolled in the Mauser PPO plan, the plan only covers part of her hospital stay or delivery. So, Patricia used some of her Hospital Indemnity benefit toward the two nights she spent in the hospital recovering after her delivery. She used the rest towards the cost of her epidural.
