International Packaging Improves Safety Through the SMART-Safety© Campaign

Michelle MachenOur Stories, International Packaging

International Packaging implemented the SMART-Safety© method by Fullmark in European facilities in September 2018.  Because of the SMART-Safety methodology, safety has improved with a descending rate of recordable incidents and frequency reported across International Packaging in Europe.

SMART-Safe© is used by more than 1,000 companies and 250,000 employees around the world including Coca-Cola, ArcelorMittal, GSK, Alstom, Atlas-Copco, Caterpillar, Italcementi, and many others.

To increase focus on safety and awareness of safety topics, European facilities receive quarterly posters, a safety-meeting outline, and employee activity resources focusing on one of twelve safety themes. Facilities use the materials to introduce a new theme at the beginning of the quarter and reinforce that theme at all levels of the facility until a new topic is introduced. 2109 topics have included Falls and Slips, Ergonomics, Tools and Equipment, Tidiness and Cleanliness, Well-Being and Life Quality at Work and more.

The investment in SMART-Safe© has been beneficial to the Company. International Packaging has reported an 80% decrease in accidents both with and without a lost day of work since implementing the SMART-Safe© methodology. Through April 2019, an 80% reduction in accidents is equivalent to 19 fewer affected employees and families negatively impacted by a workplace accident.

Following the positive results seen in European International Packaging facilities, the SMART-Safe© campaign was expanded to Asia in March 2019 and will launch in South America in July 2019. Michael Steubing, President International Packaging, commented, “This is a great tool with proven capability to change the safety behavior and culture in plant.”
