Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Protecting Your Digital Environment

Michelle MachenMauser Strategy

Every October, we join a nationwide effort to spotlight the importance of cybersecurity. For over 20 years, October has been a time to spotlight a topic that impacts all of us, every day: cybersecurity. Whether you're working from home, in the office, or on the go, protecting your digital environment is essential to keeping our organization—and yourself—safe.

At a time when we are more online than ever, being “cyber smart” is of the utmost importance. Although the online landscape is quickly changing with the growing use of AI and increased sophistication of social engineering tactics, basic cybersecurity practices still remain essential to protecting your online presence. Follow these basic tips to do your part to keep yourself and our company cyber safe.

Avoid Phishing Scams

Keep an eye out for phishing and other scam attempts in your email, texts, direct messages, and phone calls. Always verify the sender before clicking links or downloading attachments. If you spot a scam, report it!

Use Strong Passwords

Passwords are your first line of defense against cybercriminals and data breaches. All passwords should be:

    • Long – Every one of your passwords should be at least 12 characters long.
    • Unique – Each account needs to be protected with its own unique password. Never reuse passwords. This way, if one of your accounts is compromised, your other accounts remain secured. We’re talking really unique, not just changing one character or adding a “2” at the end. None of your passwords should look alike.
    • Complex – Each unique password should be a combination of upper-case letters, lower-case letters, numbers and special characters.
Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication provides an extra layer of security for your accounts that requires anyone logging into an account to navigate a two-step process to prove their identity. It makes it twice as hard for criminals to access an online account. Choose and use the most secure MFA method available for your accounts.

Update Software

Updating software and devices is the easiest way to stay protected from security threats. Perform updates as soon as they become available or set automatic updates. When downloading a software update, only get it from the company that created it. Never use a hacked, pirated or unlicensed version of software.
